I've tried another way to join co-op that seems to work. Both my friend and I start up Far Cry 3, and he sets up a co-op lobby. I use Alt-Tab to get back to Uplay, and use the Uplay chat to join my friends game lobby. Then click on the game icon to switch back into the game. very clunky, but it may work for you. Last I read it was friends only multiplayer. Your friend can drop in and out and do the campaign. They will keep all the exp/money/ items unless they are quest rewards and no story progress for your friend will be saved.
